Vintage Watch Care 101: How to Keep Your Timepiece Running for Decades

A well-maintained vintage watch can easily outlive its owner. These simple habits will help you keep your Seiko 5, Orient, or Citizen running smoothly for years to come.

1. Keep It Wound or Worn Regularly

Automatic watches rely on movement to stay wound. If you don't wear your watch daily, give it a gentle manual wind every few days, or wear it at least a couple of times a week to keep the mainspring properly tensioned.

2. Avoid Magnets and Strong Electronics

Vintage mechanical movements are sensitive to magnetic fields. Keep your watch away from speakers, phone cases with magnetic closures, and laptops, as exposure can cause your watch to run fast, slow, or stop entirely.

3. Be Mindful of Water Exposure

Most vintage watches were not built with modern water-resistance standards in mind, even if they show a "water resistant" marking. Avoid swimming, showering, or exposing your watch to heavy water pressure — gaskets degrade over time and may no longer seal as well as they once did.

4. Service the Movement Periodically

Just like a car needs an oil change, a mechanical movement needs periodic servicing — typically every 3 to 5 years — to clean and re-lubricate the internal gears. Skipping this can lead to increased wear and reduced accuracy over time.

5. Store It Properly

When not wearing your watch, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can fade vintage dials over time. A simple watch box or soft pouch is enough to protect the case and crystal from scratches.

6. Clean Gently, Never Submerge

Wipe the case and strap with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or fully submerging the watch in water or cleaning solutions, especially around the crown and caseback seams.
